2017 CSA standard B354.8:17 for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPS) requires that all operators receive training if you rent or purchase this type of equipment. As a business owner or manager you have a legal requirement to ensure that your staff have received adequate training.

The training requirement under this standard consists of three levels -
- Mobile Powered Access Fundamentals theoretical course 1 is available online and is a requisite for the practical operator evaluation course. It is also an excellent course for supervisors and business owners to take as a stand alone certification
- Practical Evaluation is required for the specific group of machine you will be using - Group A or Group B
- Finally - familiarization on the specific machine you are using is required whenever you are using a different model of machine

Competent operators must know, not only how to operate the particular class of scissor-lift to which they will be operating, but also be aware of the hazards associated; they must be able to operate the scissor lift in a manner that protects both their own safety and the safety of others in the workplace.
